SS Britannic - Juggernaut (1974)
The SS Britannic not to be confused with the white star line hospital ship Britannic was a fictional ship from the 1974 movie Juggernaut starring Richard Harris, Anthony Hopkins and Omar Sharif, the film plot involves a terrorist who places bombs on the Britannic inside 7 steel barrels in order to obtain a ransom.
The movie was mainly filmed on board a real ship the TS Maxim Gorkiy, The livery on the ship was changed and replaced with fake livery of the fictitious sovereign line the ships name was also altered to Britannic.
in a bizarre twist in 1975 the maxim Gorkiy was involved in an incident where terrorists had placed two bombs below the waterline in an attempt to sink her, the bombs were detonated when she was approaching New York but the damage inflicted did not sink the ship.
Other incidents in her colourful life include
Hosting an international summit between George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1989, and later that same year 3 people were injured onboard by an exploding television.
Her charter to phoenix reisen ended in 2008 and not renewed due to new requirements of the SOLAS regulations coming into effect in 2010 which would have involved the ship undergoing a major expensive refit her future now remained uncertain, plans to convert her into a static hotel ship failed and maxim Gorkiy was eventually scrapped in 2009.
