SS Britannic  -  Juggernaut (1974)

The SS Britannic not to be confused with the white star line hospital ship Britannic was a fictional ship from the 1974 movie Juggernaut starring Richard Harris, Anthony Hopkins and Omar Sharif, the film plot involves a terrorist who places bombs on the Britannic inside 7 steel barrels in order to obtain a ransom.

The movie was mainly filmed on board a real ship the TS Maxim Gorkiy, The livery on the ship was changed and replaced with fake livery of the fictitious sovereign line the ships name was also altered to Britannic.

in a bizarre twist in 1975 the maxim Gorkiy was involved in an incident where terrorists had placed two bombs below the waterline in an attempt to sink her, the bombs were detonated when she was approaching New York but the damage inflicted did not sink the ship.

Other incidents in her colourful life include

Hosting an international summit between George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1989, and later that same year 3 people were injured onboard by an exploding television.

Her charter to phoenix reisen ended in 2008 and not renewed due to new requirements of the SOLAS regulations coming into effect in 2010 which would have involved the ship undergoing a major expensive refit her future now remained uncertain, plans to convert her into a static hotel ship failed and maxim Gorkiy was eventually scrapped in 2009.

Orca - Jaws (1975)

orca-Jaws photo

Ok the orca is not  a ship but a small fishing boat, but we thought we would throw it in for fun.

There were two boats used in the movie a replica of the orca was built for the sinking scene at the end of the film this boat Orca II was left on a beach near the small fishing village Menemsha, in Massachusetts, United States along with other bits and pieces left after filming, much of the Boat disappeared over the years due to souvenir hunters The remains were broken up in 2005, the other orca is Thought to be at the universal studios lot.

The first victim of the shark in jaws 2 was actually an Orca (killer whale) it is thought this may have been added as a Hollywood joke as Sam quint's boat was called Orca.

The Orca fishing boat was originally called The Warlock

RMS Queen Elizabeth was an ocean liner operated by the Cunard White Star Line after many years of service she was retired in 1968 and the Queen Elizabeth was sold to a group of Philadelphia businessmen who intended to operate the ship as a hotel and tourist attraction however after running out of money the ship was sold in 1970 to Hong Kong tycoon C.Y. Tung, who intended to convert the vessel into a university During the conversion, however, the vessel was gutted by a fire that broke out at several different locations aboard, this is thought to have been caused by arson.

The ship capsized in shallow water in Hong Kong Victoria Harbour on January 9th 1972. The wreck was featured in the 1974 James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, as a covert headquarters for MI6.
